info When Yangon locals are quizzed on things to do for day trips, the response is quite often the same – parks or pagodas. With the more recently built shopping centres in the city, cinemas may provide an air-conditioned alternative, especially for young couples.

Though parks and pagodas are very beautiful, and cinemas fun for the latest flicks, options can be limited for those seeking a more active form of recreation.

A newly-built recreation center may provide the solution.

Constructed as a weather-proof stadium, the building houses an ice-skating rink and bowling alley inside. The rink is the first of its kind in Myanmar, and also provides a café for refreshments for those seeking to cool down on the ice.

Ice skating is something of a novelty in Myanmar, which is why the rink provides trainers free of charge. Six local instructors and one Japanese trainer will assist first-timers.

For those wanting to escape the heat outside, skaters will enjoy a surface temperature of between -8 to -10 Celsius. The rink measures a total of 25 by 27 metres and skating times are from 10am to 10pm, with an hour’s break at 1pm and 5pm to resurface the ice for smoothness.

Some also wanted to trainers to take better care of the customers, but given the rink’s popularity it’s not surprising they have a busy time managing all the skaters. As the sport gains popularity, however, and children become more confident on the ice, such concerns may become less frequent.

The rink employs a nurse for any serious injuries.
