Zafar Shah Dargah (Tomb)Zafar Shah Dargah (Tomb)

info The Tomb is situated near the southern stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

According to its stone inscription of 1937, the Last King of Great India is believed to have been buried near this spot. When his country became a British colony, he was sent away from his beloved country forever.

Have you read William Dalrymple’s THE LAST MUGHAL? Ever wonder what became of the last king of Mughal? Visit his burial place in Yangon.

Mirza Abu Zafar Sirajuddin Muhammad Bahadur Shah Zafar (24 October 1775 – 7 November 1862) was the last Mughal emperor. He was the second son of and became the successor to his father, Akbar II, upon his death on 28 September 1837. He was a nominal Emperor, as the Mughal Empire existed in name only and his authority was limited only to the city of Delhi (Shahjahanbad). Following his involvement in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British exiled him to Yangon (then Rangoon)in British-controlled Myanmar ( then Burma), after convicting him on conspiracy charges.

Bahadur Shah Zafar was a devout Sufi. He was regarded as a Sufi Pir and used to accept murids or pupils. The newspaper Delhi Urdu Akhbaar described him as "one of the leading saints of the age, approved of by the divine court." Before his accession, he lived like "a poor scholar and dervish", differing from his three royal brothers, Mirza Jahangir, Salim and Babur.

Shah Zafar died at the age of 87 in 1862. He was buried at the rear of the Main Guard in a brick grave covered over with turf level with the ground. The ceremony was attended by his two children and their servant but not Zafar's wife, Zinat Mahal.
It was also said that his death did not have any effect on the people of Rangoon, except for some Mohammedans who paid their tribute to the "final triumph of Islam."

The location of the grave of Bahadur Shah Zafar (or Mirza Abu Zafar Sirajuddin Muhammad Bahadur Shah Zafar), the last Mughal Emperor, at Rangoon in Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar) is in dispute. He was buried at the back of his enclosure, but by 1903 the location of his grave was forgotten. After some protests, the British were forced to construct a stone slab to mark the site of his grave. The location of his burial was once again relocated in 1991, when excavators found the skeleton of the last Mughal emperor there. A mausoleum was constructed and inaugurated in 1994.

If you are visiting the mausoleum, please be aware that you will be in the holy Islamic ground so you need to be dressed decently. Cover your shoulders and knees. Also you will have to take off your shoes.
